Samsung Presents a Program that Turns Old Smartphones into Smart Home Sensors

Jakarta, Selular.ID – Samsung has launched a beta program which helps users to take advantage of their old unused Galaxy smartphone. Users will be able to change the function of the old smartphone into a smart home sensor.

As quoted from The Verge, the old smartphone will download software updates to be converted into a smart home sensor.

Several new functions will be owned by the smartphone, one of which is the ability to detect the sound of a baby crying so that it turns on the house lights at night.

This program is still limited to certain models launched in 2018 or later. Surely this is an interesting program and can help users get more from their old device.

Announced at CES earlier this year, Samsung launched the program in the US, UK and South Korea. By downloading software updates via the SmartThings application, users can access two basic functions.

The first is an audio sensor that detects the sound of a crying baby, an animal barking or meowing, or a knock on the door. When it detects one of them, it sends an alert to your phone with a voice recording.

Another function is a light level sensor that can turn on the connected light automatically when the brightness level in a room is below a certain threshold.

Samsung says the update includes battery optimizations needed to keep the phone powered and functioning as a sensor for an extended period of time.

Galaxy S and Note phones launched from 2018 onwards are eligible, as long as they are running Android 9 or later. Samsung says more devices will be supported in the future.
