Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G detailed review in Romanian (Evaluation Mobilissimo)

The foldable phones had a fiery 2019, in fact a baptism in fire … and it seems. This is always the case with pioneers, they take risks. The second generation comes for Samsung with the lesson learned, and his successor Galaxy Fold take the best from the first model, but also its innovations Z Flip and combines them on a single smartphone. Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G brings a larger external display, just as fans requested, plus a larger internal display, but also the new UTG layer from Z Flip for the internal display.

It comes in shades Mystic Bronze and it costs 9699 lei. It debuted on August 5, with a brief presentation alongside Note 20, but all the details spilled over to us that Rapunzel’s hair on September 1 at the event Samsung Unpacked Part 2. We also get a new hinge with a new one “cover”, a little bigger, but also with those “Hairs” inside that cleans impurities and particles. I got rid of the unsightly bangs on the first Fold, and the selfie cameras are cut out of the screen.

Another reason to be attracted to this phone is the fact that it brings the most powerful Qualcomm processor on the market, Snapdragon 865+. All this being said and always keeping in mind that this phone invokes through an unseen Ouija board its spirit Nokia Communicator, we proceed to a review after 4 intense days of use.

More refined, more comfortable, with an evolved hinge

Samsung Galaxy Z fold 2 5G borrows design elements and mechanisms from Galaxy Fold (general format), but also from Galaxy Z Flip (hinges for cleaning the hinge and UTG glass). From the first contact it can be seen that this foldable phone is heavier than the Galaxy Fold, which is also confirmed on paper, so that the new foldable weighs 282 grams, with 20 over its predecessor.

It measures 6.9 mm open and 16.8 mm closed. It comes with glass on the outside, an aluminum frame, and on the inside the screen offers a combo of UTG + plastic protection applied from the factory (and the outer screen has something like that). Available on Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black and the luxury option Thom Browne, this folder invokes the memory of a Nokia Communicator. It folds and unfolds very easily and we no longer have that feeling of rigidity and fragility that we sometimes felt at Galaxy Fold. The edges are now narrower for the folding screen and I also got rid of the bangs.

The selfie cameras are integrated in the form of holes directly in the screen. I would also mention the fact that now we don’t have a single opening / folding angle of the phone, the 90 degree angle from Galaxy Fold. Between 75 and 115 degrees the phone will remain open exactly in the position we want. For those wondering, yes, the fold is still visible and felt in the middle of the screen, but rather on a white background it is visible. Does it hurt or confuse some experience? I’d say no.

It’s rather annoying that we have black stripes on the screen when watching video (up / down), and that hole in the screen in the image, but we talk about that in the Display chapter. We also have a CAM hinge mechanism and a series of hairpins inside that clean impurities, dust and other particles. I understood that the mechanism would be even smaller than the Galaxy Z Flip, which inaugurated it. The hinge cover seems more prominent to me and it’s the first thing you notice on the phone.

At the same time all “Phylum” The hinges have been better disguised and hidden in the design for extra elegance. The construction is solid and if you were curious, we still don’t have IP68 certification. It also seems to me that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G closes better than the Galaxy Fold, even if it still leaves a bit of space between the two segments when folded.

We are still waiting for a more effective protection of the display surface, because the plastic foil of the screen inside attracts a lot of fingerprints and grease and I had to always wipe it. It’s also pretty easy to scratch.

We feel some welcome design upgrades after Galaxy Fold, which make the phone more comfortable and pleasant to use. However, do not neglect his high weight. Personally, I’m glad I was able to handle it very easily with one hand and two, and it didn’t seem slippery.

No bangs, with higher refresh rates, narrower edges

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 bring upgrades for both on-board screens: the external one, Cover Display, but also the internal, foldable one. The interior now has a 7.6-inch diagonal, with Dynamic AMOLED panel and comes with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels. It also offers HDR10 + support, but also 120 Hz refresh rates. It is not a classic refresh rate, but an Adaptive one, ie it will adapt to the application displayed on the screen and will adjust the number of screen refreshes per second. There is also the option of refresh rate of 60 Hz.

Then we have the outer screen, Cover Display, also growing at a diagonal of 6.23 inches, compared to its predecessor Galaxy Fold which had only a 4.6 inch screen. The resolution is 2260 x 816 pixels. Let’s move on to the viewing experience. You can watch movies and play games on the external screen, but it would be a shame to waste the potential of the internal screen.

It is foldable and has a crease in the middle, but it can only be seen on a white background and it doesn’t seem to bother me. What bothers me though is that we have black bars up and down for video viewing and there is also the selfie in-screen camera hole that distracts you. Samsung should have integrated it above so that it could enter that space with the black bars. In this one it seems to me that we have a bright panel, with a very wide range of colors, perfectly deep black and it remained legible even in the sun.

Screen Brightness Test (secondary)

  • 1.Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2550 (LUX)

The viewing angles are wide and the experience was pleasant. I would mention that the inner screen tends to get a bit dirty with grease stains, fingerprints, on that plastic foil, the protective one. Below it is the UTG glass for extra rigidity and solidity, as in the Galaxy Z Flip. And the external screen has a plastic foil applied from the factory and being very long you will crop / zoom to see a full screen YouTube video. I also did tests with the luxmeter and I got 552 LUX on the foldable inner screen and 550 LUX on the outer one.

With these values, we surpassed the Galaxy S20 series, on the first Fold (it had only 404 LUX), but also on the Huawei Mate XS and Z Flip. We are below the iPhone 11 Pro Max in terms of brightness if you want to land a landmark and below the Galaxy Note 10+. The settings are very generous, such as those related to brightness, adaptive brightness, refresh rate adjustment (120 Hz / 60 Hz), blue light filter, but also a Screen Mode. It can be adjusted to its Viu Natural and we also have white balance settings (slider from hot to cold) and 3 sliders R, G and B.

We also go to the font size and font style and we have an Easy Mode. I would say an upgrade across the screen to the Galaxy Fold 1, especially since we got rid of the bangs, we have higher refresh rates, narrower edges, larger diagonals and increased brightness. However, those black bars and the position of the selfie cutout can be considered shortcomings. It would also be the plastic foil that you have to be very careful not to scratch, the one inside. The folding is fluid, natural, nothing stiff or taut or fragile, as I felt at Galaxy Fold.
