2. Size and colors

Of Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is larger than the regular S20, although neither are compact phones. Furthermore, the FE version is a lot heavier, despite the housing being made of plastic. These are the dimensions of both devices in millimeters:

  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: 159.8 (length) by 74.5 (width) by 8.4 millimeters (thickness), weight of 190 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy S20: 151.7 (length) x 69.1 (width) x 7.9 millimeters (thickness), weight of 163 grams

If you are looking for a colorful phone, then you should go for the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. The youngest member of the Samsung family is available in no less than six colors: blue, pink, mint green, red, white and orange. The Samsung Galaxy S20 ‘only’ comes in four colors: gray, blue, pink and white. Both devices are also dust and waterproof thanks to the IP68 certification.

3. Screen: bigger, but less sharp

Given its format, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE therefore also a larger screen than the normal S20. The former has a 6.5 inch display, while the S20 remains ‘stuck’ at 6.2 inches. Both devices have a hole for the selfie camera at the very top in the middle of the screen.

Qualitatively, the screen of the regular S20 is better. This is due to the higher pixel density (ppi), which indicates the ratio between resolution and screen size. In short, the higher the ppi, the sharper the screen:

  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a ppi of 407
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 has a ppi of 563

Speaking of the screen: the fingerprint scanners below the display are also different. The FE has an optical fingerprint scanner, while that of the S20 is ultrasonic. In other words, the latter recognizes your finger based on small sound vibrations, while the S20 FE scans your finger via a camera sensor located under the screen.

4. Processor and battery life

Striking: the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE runs on a Snapdragon 865 chip. That is, when you go for the 5G version. The 4G version of the FE ‘just’ has its own Samsung Exynos chip, the 990 that is. This is also the beating heart of the regular Samsung Galaxy S20: in terms of processor power, there is little difference between the two.

A spearhead of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is the battery life. The battery has a capacity of 4500 mAh: the same size as the Samsung Note 20 Ultra, So. The normal version of the S20 has a slightly less powerful battery of 4000 mAh. Combined with the less demanding (and therefore less good) screen of the S20 FE, this device does win the longest in terms of battery life.

Both devices can also fast charge with a maximum power of 25 watts. However, the packaging of both the S20 and S20 FE comes with a 15 Watt charger, so if you want to charge faster, you have to buy a separate fast charger. Reverse charging, with which you can power wireless earbuds, for example, by placing them on the back of the phone, is available with both S20s.

5. Camera: zoom, zoom and zoom

Both Samsung Galaxy S20s have a triple camera on the back, but there are differences. The S20 FE can zoom optical 3x, whereby you get closer to the image while shooting without loss of quality, while the optical zoom of the regular S20 does not extend beyond 1.1x. With a software trick, Hybrid Zoom, you can still zoom in up to 3 times.

Furthermore, the cameras are not very different from each other. For example, both devices have a 12-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens. The telephoto lens, which you use for zooming, is 64 megapixels with the regular S20, but ‘only’ 8 megapixels with the FE.

Do you take a lot of selfies? Then the 32 megapixel self-portrait camera on the S20 FE definitely beats the 10 megapixel selfie camera on the S20.

Samsung Galaxy S20

Giving general purchase advice is always difficult, but the fact is that the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a better value for money on paper. The device ‘borrows’ a lot of functions from its more expensive brothers, but is hundreds of euros more affordable. Especially when you are involved in photography a lot, this device is probably the best choice for you. He makes sharper selfies and excels when zooming in.

Do you care little about photos, but do you value a high-quality screen, for example? Then you should go for the regular Samsung S20. This device has a much sharper screen. The glass finish also undoubtedly beats the plastic housing of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which feels a bit cheap.
