Samsung: Galaxy S20 has hidden 96 Hz mode

The website XDA Developers has with Galaxy S20 discovered a hidden mode that sets the frame rate to 96 Hz. In the system settings, users can usually only choose between 60 and 120 Hz. The hidden option can also be found on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, as Golem.de has checked.

The frame rate determines how fluid content is shown on the display. The 120 Hz mode, for example, leads to smoother movements when scrolling, and the higher frame rate can also be advantageous in games due to a lower delay. The disadvantage of 120 Hz is that the battery is drained faster during use.

At a frame rate of 60 Hz, however, the battery is less stressed, but the display is less smooth in direct comparison. Some manufacturers therefore offer a compromise of 90 Hz as a setting – Samsung does not. However, the setting is already possible via a shell command.

Simple mode selection app available

So that inexperienced users don’t have to deal with it, an XDA developer forum member has programmed a small app. This can be used to easily switch between 120 Hz and 96 Hz. As with the 120 Hz setting, the 96 Hz mode can only be used with a Full HD resolution and not, like the 60 Hz mode, with a full resolution.

We tried the app on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. According to the test page Testufo.com the application works, we can use it to switch between the modes. Direct access can also be stored on the start screen. There is still no precise overview of how much longer the running time at 96 Hz compared to 120 Hz is – but theoretically it should be longer.
