Samsung Display teases laptops with nearly bezel-less screens (93% lid area) and an inconspicuous sub-screen camera

Samsung Display published on the page in Weibo short video advertising technology for discreet placement of the camera under the screen surface for laptops called “Samsung Blade Bezel”. It is not yet entirely clear whether this is just a concept, or whether the South Korean giant already has the appropriate technology ready.

The video describes a certain technology of placing a webcam under the surface of the Under Panel Camera (UPC) screen, which will further reduce the thickness of the frames, making them almost invisible. In fact, we are talking about a laptop without frames in the classical sense, and the only thing that will frame the screen is the edges of the case itself. In addition, the technology will significantly reduce the thickness and weight of the OLED panel itself and therefore create more portable laptops. The manufacturer says about the effective display area (ratio of screen area to cover area) in 93% and a panel thickness of 1 mm with a weight of 130 g.

It’s no secret that Samsung long enough develops technology of inconspicuous placement of the camera under the surface of the screen. Fresh rumors indicatethat the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be the company’s first smartphone with a sub-screen camera. On the other hand, at one time a subscreen camera attributed Galaxy Fold 2, but in the end it didn’t.

Released last year ZTE Axon 20 5G – the first and so far the only smartphone in the world with a sub-screen camera. AND, we have already seen beforethat the camera “brightens” under the screen and shoots very mediocre. Last year Xiaomi too teaser own third generation of discreet sub-screen camera, ready for use in production smartphones. Literally two weeks ago we told about a Samsung patent describing an unusual way of placing a camera under a smartphone screen using an additional shutter screen.

In theory, placing the camera under a laptop screen seems to be an easier task than a smartphone – the pixel density in laptop screens is lower, as are the requirements for camera quality.

So far there is no data on when such laptops may come out and what kind of models they will be. Samsung Display supplies OLED panels to various laptop manufacturers including Dell, ASUS and Lenovo.
