Sam Smith under fire for striking outfits: “If it was slim and straight, they would applaud them” | Celebrities

CelebritiesBritish superstar Sam Smith (30) – who came out as a non-binary in May 2019 – released a music video for their hit single ‘I’m not here to make friends’ on Friday. It features plenty of lavish costumes, including a pink fur coat, a cream-colored corset and sparkling gloves with matching nipple covers. And the artist is now receiving a lot of criticism about this via social media. Although that is contradicted by the fans of the star.

As seen in the video above, in addition to their cream corset with nipple covers, Smith also wears a Vegas-inspired black showgirl outfit with a large feathered headdress, a low-cut satin corset top and a matching black satin skirt with a high split.

The sexy looks led to a lot of criticism on social media. One user even called the video “despicable,” “evil” and “inappropriate for children.” But that person was promptly silenced by Smith’s fans who defend the costumes designed by Christian Cowan. Many say the criticism of the video is an expression of fatphobia and homophobia: “The backlash against Sam Smith comes from people who don’t want others to be openly sexual unless they’re skinny,” writes a fan of the ‘Unholy’ singer on Twitter. Another wrote: “If Sam Smith were slim and straight, he wouldn’t be ridiculed for wearing a dress. Just look at Harry Styles wearing a dress on the cover of a magazine, he’s applauded for it.”

Executed in the street

It is not the first time that the artist has faced such hatred. In an interview for Apple Music, Smith once said, “Having people yelling at me on the street is the hardest part,” Smith said. “Someone even spat at me. That’s bizarre.” The singer continues: “What I find difficult about it is that it happens to me while I’m famous and a pop star. Can you imagine what that’s like for other kids, like queer kids? It’s just so sad that we live in 2023 and it’s still happening. It’s exhausting, especially in England.”
