Sam Houston Cross Country: 2025 Season Preview & Bearkat Opener

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats cross country teams are set to⁢ launch their 2025 season this Friday, hosting the Bearkat Opener at Kate Barr Ross ⁤Park.This marks the first competitive ⁤action for‍ the program ⁤following a ⁢year of transition and building momentum within Conference USA.

The Bearkats ‍will welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville, Our Lady ‍of the Lake University,⁤ and North‍ American University ​to Huntsville for ‌the meet. The women’s race will cover a 4,000-meter course, while the men will ‍compete over‍ 6,000 meters. The event provides an early-season opportunity⁣ for Sam Houston to assess its athletes and establish a baseline for performance as they navigate a challenging schedule.

Last season, the Bearkat men finished ‍fourth at the ‌CUSA Conference⁣ Championships, posting an average time of 24:54, narrowly trailing Jacksonville State. The women’s team ‍placed⁢ ninth with an average ⁢time of 23:31. This year, the team aims ‌to build on those results and improve⁢ their standing within the conference.

Looking ahead,⁣ Sam⁢ Houston’s schedule includes the Texas A&M Invitational ​(Sept. 13, College Station), the Clifton Gillard⁤ Invite (Sept.25, ‍Prairie View), and the Arturo Barrios Invitational (Oct. ‍17, College Station) as​ key readiness races leading up to ‌the Conference ⁢USA Championships. The‍ CUSA Championships will be held in Huntsville, Alabama, on Nov. 1.
