HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats cross country teams are set to launch their 2025 season this Friday, hosting the Bearkat Opener at Kate Barr Ross Park. This marks the first competitive action for the program following a year of transition and building momentum within Conference USA.
The Bearkats will welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville, Our Lady of the Lake University, and North American University to Huntsville for the meet. The women’s race will cover a 4,000-meter course, while the men will compete over 6,000 meters. The event provides an early-season opportunity for Sam Houston to assess its athletes and establish a baseline for performance as they navigate a challenging schedule.
Last season, the Bearkat men finished fourth at the CUSA Conference Championships, posting an average time of 24:54, narrowly trailing Jacksonville State. The women’s team placed ninth with an average time of 23:31. This year, the team aims to build on those results and improve their standing within the conference.
Looking ahead, Sam Houston’s schedule includes the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 13, College Station), the Clifton Gillard Invite (Sept.25, Prairie View), and the Arturo Barrios Invitational (Oct. 17, College Station) as key readiness races leading up to the Conference USA Championships. The CUSA Championships will be held in Huntsville, Alabama, on Nov. 1.
