Salvo Basile column on film festivals and financial aid – Columnists – Opinion

Doctor Iván Duque:

Allow me to write this from president to president, with all due respect. I represent the National Association of Film Festivals and Samples (Anafe), which is made up of 52 vital encounters around the image, from San Andrés to Ipiales, an army of cultural managers who make homeland every year in a titanic work that impacts millions of Colombians. This association is the one that projects the most Colombian cinema, and brings the joy and reflection of films to many corners of the country.

The object of this letter is a respectful request to heal an injustice: unfortunately, only some of them are lucky enough to get funding for their events, and it is not exactly the small ones, but the festivals of the big cities, which share the budget of the only call that exists of the Cinematographic Development Fund.

Last year the following Anafe festivals were stopped: the Festival de Cine al Mar, in Santa Marta; the Ipiales Film Festival, the Macarena Green Film Festival, the Santander International Film Festival, the El Espejo Film Festival, the San Agustín Film Festival, the Viterbo Film and Video Festival, among others .

Festivals are the future of circulation and exhibition. When they vaccinate and mass events return, the cinema will be there again to join us as a species and give meaning from the symbolic to life, something it has been doing for more than 100 years, from the popular fair to cyberspace. Today’s society is unthinkable without movies and their massive appropriation.

There is a world beyond video on demand platforms. It is at festivals where creators can present their works directly to viewers. This human bond will be decisive in the post-pandemic. The ‘creator-work-audience’ interaction is essential for artistic expressions. Art saves lives; after the covid-19 pandemic, and the World Health Organization speaks of a mental health pandemic; there will be film festivals and films to help heal the loneliness and anguish that as a global society we have lived in this long year. I politely request that you expand the supporting funds for these festivities of images and sounds. In the cinema, neither death nor oblivion exist.

Except Basile
