Salvatore Mancuso could be deported to Colombia

Jaime Paeres, lawyer for former paramilitary chief Salvatore Mancuso, confirmed to EL HERALDO that his client could be deported to Colombia, as informed by the United States Immigration authorities.

“We have already been notified, there is talk of deportation. Now we are going to analyze what we can do. The best option will be the one that guarantees Salvatore his life, that he is not going to be tortured and can tell the truth, always thinking that this way he will be able to fulfill the victims of the country, ”Paeres told this medium.

The lawyer clarified that although it is a deportation, if he steps on Colombian soil, the former head of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia would be detained by a decision of the Superior Court of Barranquilla of the Justice and Peace chamber.

In the document, according to Mancuso’s defense, it is notified that the deportation to Italy was suspended. El Tiempo, citing diplomatic sources, assured that the government of Donald Trump, due to political interests, mediated for him to be sent to Colombia.

However, Paeres indicated that among the options being evaluated is the permanence in the United States. He also pointed out that there is a court order that gave free rein to Mancuso’s deportation to Italy.

Thus, the defense of the former head of the AUC will evaluate the various options that it says exist to report in the coming days what will be the legal solution to the decision of the US government.

Last week a federal judge in the United States ordered the deportation of the former AUC commander to Italy, a country of which he also possesses nationality.

Mancuso, extradited to the North American country in 2008 for drug trafficking, was to be sent to Europe before next September 4.
