Sales of new cars continue to decline. Škoda remains in the lead, Toyota and Kia grew significantly

Sales of new cars in the Czech Republic fell again year on year. In the first three months, 4.3 percent fewer passenger cars were sold than a year ago, according to statistics from the Association of Automobile Importers. Compared to the last year before 2019, registrations have fallen by as much as a fifth. This is due to the overall reduction in production.

In the first quarter of 2022, 47,391 cars were sold, ie 4.3 percent less than in the same period last year. In March, the market fell by almost 16 percent. The reason is, despite the high demand, a reduction in the production of most manufacturers due to missing parts. The number of registrations was one-fifth lower than in the previous year 2019. This was announced by the Association of Car Importers at today’s press conference.

According to the consulting company PwC, car sales could fall by as much as 12 percent to 180,000 cars this year. This is due to the long-term negative development in Ukraine, inflation and the persistent shortage of parts such as chips, plastic granulate, cable harnesses and some metals. According to her, in the case of a favorable development, sales may increase by 1.5 percent to 210,000 cars. “The development of car sales this year will be significantly influenced by the difficult-to-predict development of several main effects, especially the war in Ukraine and the lack of components,” said PwC expert Pavel Štefek.

The best-selling brand in the first quarter is Škoda with 16,654 registered cars, which represents a year-on-year decrease of seven percent, followed by Hyundai with a decrease of two percent to 4,419 cars and Volkswagen with 3,463 cars, a decrease of 29 percent. The fourth Toyota, on the other hand, increased sales by 55 percent to 3,172 cars and Kia grew by 60 percent to 2,459 cars. The best-selling model is the Škoda Octavia (3887 pcs) in front of the Fabia (3276 pcs) and the Škoda Superb (2059 pcs). The electric Škoda Enyaq iV with 311 registrations was among the thirty best-selling models.

The SUV class had the largest share with almost 42 percent, followed by the lower middle class with 16 percent and small cars occupied 14 percent. In terms of fuel, gasoline leads with 66 percent of the market, followed by diesel with a quarter share. Hybrid sales (including mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids) increased 42 percent to 6,674 vehicles, the union said. 777 electric cars have been sold so far this year.

According to him, sales of light commercial vehicles fell by 6.8 percent. He leads Renault with 580 registrations, followed by Toyota with 494 cars and Peugeot with 427 cars. The most popular model is the Iveco Daily ahead of the Peugeot Boxer and Renault Master.

Truck sales, on the other hand, rose 2.9 percent to 2,029 vehicles. Volvo (447 units), DAF (372 units) and Mercedes-Benz (364 units) sold the most.

Bus registrations fell 6.6 percent to 366 cars. The domestic Iveco Bus sold the most (139 pieces), followed by Setra (89 pieces) and also the Czech brand SOR (38 pieces).

Motorcycle sales increased 42 percent to 5,120 machines. Compared to 2019, this is an increase of 50 percent. The number one on the market is Honda with 959 motorcycles, the second was completed by the Chinese CF Moto with 516 machines sold and the third by Yamaha with sales of 381 motorcycles.
