Sale of youth books: increases thanks to TikTok

The video social network TikTok is driving the sale of youth books.

TikTok is becoming a very productive tool for the sale of youth books. At least that’s what Kiera O’Brienen pointed out in the latest Bookseller conference on children’s and youth books. In it, O’Brienen shared how sales have grown in recent months in the UK.

From March 14 to August 7, 2021, the children’s and youth book market had a rebound. The result amounts to 23.7 million books sold, worth almost 168 million euros. This represents 11.9% in volume and 11.8% in value, compared to 2019. The same is true for the preschool and picture book sector. Both added up by 19.6%, about 60.8 million euros.

Only the Young Adult Lit segment has registered a growth of 61%. This is where TikTok comes in as a key tool to understand this growth. For this reason, O’Brienen said in his conference that the bestsellers of the youth segment “owe everything to TikTok.”

Several local authors have pointed out how their sales have skyrocketed thanks to the promotion of their books through TikTok.

In addition, the non-fiction segment has given the other definitive boost, with an increase of 23.8%. This amounts to 23.4 million euros. According to O’Brienen’s estimates, the data expected for next year could be significantly better. Or, at least, stay on the same growth line.

We have previously talked about how TikTok is becoming the place where books are talked about. The Booktokers are giving young people’s literature a boost that you have to watch out for.

The youngest are not on Facebook or Twitter. And it seems that Instagram begins to be more for boomers than for the latest digital generation. They prefer TikTok and Twitch. This latest platform of streaming aims to occupy part of the audience that moves on YouTube. Platforms and channels change and younger readers with them.
