André Caumont, 77, lives Saint-Paul-du-Vernay (Calvados). He started football at 16 in Martragny before joining Secqueville-en-Bessin then Lantheuil. From 1962 to 1965, he was a player and manager at Bénouville before joining Fresne-Camilly until 1985.
It was in 1986 that he joined the “L’Espérance” club in Saint-Paul-du-Vernay as a manager. He will become its president a year later. The club will be dissolved in 2010 before leaving in 2012, at the bottom of the ladder, in D4. “What is remarkable is that all the former players left with the same team on the board of directors”.
He left the club in 2015 and joined the Calvados district as a volunteer. He joined the Competitions Commission, then the Sports and Discipline Commission where he continued to work.
3 medals and a gold trophy
His involvement in the clubs and in the Calvados district earned him the gold medal from the League of Normandy at the end of November for his 50 years of volunteering. “I dedicate this medal to all the people I met on the pitch,” assures André.
He adds: “It is also for Jeannette, my partner, who worked in the shadows for many years”. The latter received the District Medal in 2013.
André will have met Aimé Jacquet who gave him the District medal in 2000, Michel Hidalgo for the silver medal of the League, Michel Vautrot, during the presentation of the vermilion medal of the League. At the end of November, it was Pierre Mankowski who presented him with his League gold trophy in Lisieux.
“What marked me the most in 50 years was when we played maintenance against Amfreville, 25 years ago. We had to win to avoid the descent. We won and stayed in the 2nd division. I was also very touched when all the former players took over after the dissolution of the Saint-Paul club and the support of the mayor, Sylvine Bellemain”. And to specify: “I will continue to invest myself in football for as long as I can”.
