Saint-Martin-des-Champs, the only municipality in Finistère without a church

The church of Saint-Martin has the particularity of being on the territory of the municipality of Morlaix (Finistère) and to also be the church of the municipality of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. Since the twelfthe century, it formed with Saint-Matthieu and Saint-Melaine, one of the three parishes of Morlaix. The district of Bourret, where the church is built, depends on this city.

At the end of the XVe century, the Priorale church gives way to a Gothic building which was severely damaged by lightning and replaced by the current church in 1775.

Stolen angels

In April 1790, the rural part of Saint-Martin was set up as an autonomous municipality and thus no longer has a church on its territory! Which makes it an exception in the region with the town of Gourhel (Morbihan).

Today, Morlaix and Saint-Martin are in charge of the maintenance of the building. This decision was taken in May 1983 unanimously by the municipal council of the then mayor, René Fily.

The church contains two angels carved in Carrara marble flanking the red marble altar. Legend has it that they were destined for the cathedral of Seville, but it was without counting on the Morlais privateer Homon de Kerdaniel who turned a blind eye to these sculptures and offered them to his hometown.
