Safe Tips to Bring Children Immunization during a Pandemic

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Time pandemic Covid-19 become an obstacle to immunization services for children. Some parents are worried about bringing their children immunizations to health facilities for fear of contracting Covid-19. The following are tips from the Indonesian Pediatrician Association so that children are safe in immunization.

Concern about Covid-19 infection seems to make some parents reluctant to bring their little one for immunization at the Puskesmas or hospital. During this pandemic, hospitals seem to be a frightening specter because of the assumption of the possibility of Covid-19 transmission in health facilities.

As a result, immunization is delayed and is not even carried out. Even though immunization is an effective way to increase the child’s immune system so that they don’t get sick easily.

Head of the IDAI Immunization Task Force Cissy B. Kartasasmita said parents really don’t need to worry about Covid-19 transmission if they comply with health protocols. Parents are also encouraged to carry their children with immunizations according to schedule for the health of their children.

“Both the hospital and the puskesmas already have channels for immunization, parents just need to follow it and adhere to health protocols,” said Cissy in a virtual discussion on World Immunization Week, Thursday (29/4).

The following are tips for safe parents to carry their children with immunizations.

– Make sure parents and children are healthy

The first is to make sure you and your child are in good health. You can delay immunization in children if you are not fit, or have a fever. Some immunizations cannot be given if the child is sick.

You should also be in good shape when you bring your immunized child to a health facility. This is because if you travel in a sick condition, you are more at risk of contracting Covid-19.

– Using masks and face shields

You can wear a mask and face shield to be better protected from the corona virus. If your child is over 5 years old, also wear a mask on the child.

– Toddlers don’t need to wear masks

Toddlers who will be immunized do not need to wear a mask because they are afraid it will make breathing difficult.

Cissy said, you can use a thin cloth that does not make it difficult for children to breathe to cover the head area. But still make sure your child has no trouble breathing. You can also use baby wheels that have a head covering so they provide protection from droplets.

– Prepare immunization records

Immunization records are an important thing that parents must prepare before leaving for a health facility.

Make sure you know what types of immunizations are given to children so that you don’t need to get an explanation from the doctor or receptionist long. The immunization logbook also makes it easier for health workers to know what immunizations have been given, what immunizations have been missed so that they can be given double immunizations.

– Make an appointment first

Avoiding crowds or congestion in the hospital can be done by making an appointment in advance. Before leaving for the hospital, you should contact the hospital and make an appointment for immunizations.

This will make your waiting time at the hospital shorter, while also avoiding crowds.
