Sáblíková returns to racing in the saddle: I don’t want to whine in pain at the finish

Do you remember when you last completed a bike race?

Sometime before the Rio Olympics, so it’s been a few years. But I don’t take it exactly as a race, I mainly want to finish. After all, 117 kilometers await me, an elevation gain of almost four thousand meters. To tell you the truth, I’ve never ridden a bike like that.

Are you scared of a giant elevation gain that exceeds 3,000 meters?

I boarded Livigno about 3700 meters in a single day. That was about five years ago. Drásal will probably be quite rough. On the other hand, I’m really looking forward to it. I watch the series Kolo pro život, I have wanted to take part in races several times, but unfortunately it always coincided with some concentration. Now everything has finally come out, because I found out that Drásal is going the day before the start of our training camp in Slovakia, so I have it on the way. Finally, I’ll try the Bike for Life. But at the same time I know that Drásal is one of the hardest races, the track has a very difficult profile, so I’m very curious what it will look like.

What tactics will you use on Drásal?

I can’t completely burn it, after all I’ll be on the track for about six or seven hours, which is completely different from driving a stage on the road, which you have three hours behind you, you just need two bidons, a gel and a stick. This will be about something else. That’s why I was already looking at the profile of the track, right after the start there is quite a big hill, so it will be difficult from the beginning. I also looked at the refreshment stations, where they are exactly, to plan what to put where, so that I don’t waste time. Jarda Kulhavý will also be at the start, I would like to greet him, but with his performance I will probably only see him at that start. Then maybe still at the finish line, if he’s not home when I get there. (Laughs)

National team colleague Nikola Zdráhalová and other members of the speed skating team will ride with you Drásala. Do you plan to stick together on the track?

The plan is that we would like to go at least half together, then we will see who will be on it. If someone is so good that others are holding him back, there is no point in waiting. Whoever wants can leave. But the basis is not to whistle the beginning. You ride a skate for a maximum of seven minutes, there is no time to save money, you go to the complete stop. But this will be different. I need to find out first what my legs are doing. I rode a mountain bike race about ten years ago and I want to feel good about it. I’m not going to worry about half. I would like to return to the Bike for Life in the future, so I don’t want to make it uncomfortable. That’s why I’m going to set a reasonable pace so that I know that when I get to my destination, I’ll be able to laugh. I don’t want to whine after the finish that everything hurts me.

Already in two. Liberated Sáblíková does not go out into the field alone

In the spring, you suffered a fracture of the instep bone while running. Does the injury no longer limit you?

I have to knock, but I practically don’t know that my leg was broken. I can run, I can jump, I can do basically anything and it doesn’t limit me in any way. This applies to the bike as much as possible from the beginning: even when I had my foot in plaster, I turned the cranks in the slippers for a good feeling. As soon as the doctor removed the plaster, the bike was the first activity in which my leg did not limit me at all.

How much did you manage to train on a bike this year?

I ride the burner often now. We talked with coach Petr Novák about the fact that when Nika and the others decided to ride Drásal, we should train more on the bike. It is not possible to start from the gym and roller skates. Normally we have a training bike about three times a week, now every day. We combine this with the training we will need in winter on skates. I now spend about four hours a day on a bike, so Drásal shouldn’t be a problem. Although the race will be even longer.
