Oldest Springbok, Desmond van Jaarsveldt, Passes Away

Tributes Pour in for Rugby Legend and Sportsman

The South African rugby community mourns the loss of Desmond Charles van Jaarsveldt, the nation’s oldest living Springbok. He passed away recently, leaving behind a significant legacy in the sport.

A Singular Test Cap

Van Jaarsveldt earned his sole Test cap in 1960, captaining South Africa against Scotland. The Springboks secured an 18-10 victory at Gqeberha’s Boet Erasmus Stadium, a match where Van Jaarsveldt also contributed a try.

Rhodesian Roots and Rugby Influence

Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), on March 31, 1929, Van Jaarsveldt represented the Springboks from his home country. He made over 60 provincial appearances for Rhodesia between 1947 and 1962, captaining the side in the Currie Cup. His commitment to rugby extended beyond his playing days, as he remained involved as a coach and administrator, and was affiliated with the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA).

“Des will not only be remembered as the oldest living Springbok in the last number of years, but he was a leader with a deep love for the game who leaves behind a wonderful legacy.”

His impact resonated beyond the rugby field. Van Jaarsveldt was also recognized as an accomplished boxer and athlete, dedicating himself to supporting and contributing to sports in his native Zimbabwe. A recent report highlighted that over 50% of retired professional rugby players in South Africa engage in coaching or administrative roles post-career, underscoring the importance of figures like Van Jaarsveldt (News24, 2023).

A Lasting Legacy Honored

Tributes emphasized his leadership and passion for the game. South African rugby family members expressed their admiration for his contributions.

“On behalf of the South African rugby family, I would like to honour his legacy as a former national captain and someone who ploughed back into our beloved game, and I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones in this very sad and difficult time.”
