Ryazan infectious disease doctor told if mosquitoes can carry coronavirus – News – Ryazan city on the city website RZN.info

Ryazan infectious disease doctor said whether mosquitoes can carry coronavirus

The doctor noted that the new virus spreads in droplets formed by sneezing or coughing.

Yevgenia Artamonova, an infectious disease specialist at Ryazan Hospital No. 4, said mosquitoes can transmit a coronavirus infection. Her comment is posted on website Regional Ministry of Health.

It is noted that a mosquito can be a carrier of the disease if it first bites an infected person or animal. At the same time, not all infections can be transmitted by insects: for example, HIV, Ebola.

According to Artamonova, there is no scientific evidence that mosquitoes transmit SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

“According to available data, it is unlikely that the insect will become a carrier of the coronavirus by biting the patient, and then be able to infect another person,” said the specialist.

The doctor noted that the new virus spreads through droplets formed by sneezing or coughing, and through human contact with infected surfaces. According to Artamonova, to date there is no evidence that coronavirus can spread through mosquitoes.

She explained that many people mistakenly perceive mosquitoes as carriers of infected blood from person to person. The specialist added that after blood enters the intestines, it takes several weeks for the insect to become a virus carrier, but this does not always happen.

“The virus must catch the cells lining the intestines, salivary glands, and the rest of the mosquito’s body. This process can take from a few days to a week. Every step in the process can be an insurmountable barrier to the virus, ”said the doctor.
