Ryanair strike announced in Spain – Mallorca also affected

For holidaymakers who have booked a flight with Ryanair to Spain during the summer holidays, the journey could be problematic. Reason: The employees of the Irish low-cost airline in Spain announced strikes on several days in June and July. If the plan goes ahead, all ten airports that Ryanair flies to in Spain would be affected. These include the airports of popular holiday islands such as Mallorca and Ibiza.

A number of Ryanair flights to Spain could be canceled during the summer holidays of all days. The Spanish unions USOP and SITCPLA, which represent the crew members of the Irish low-cost airline, have called for a total of six days of strikes in June and July. The 24-hour strikes were announced for June 24, 25, 26 and 30 and July 1 and 2. This was announced by the employee representatives in a press release, reported among others by the “Mallorca Zeitung“. Should Ryanair employees in Spain actually go on strike, flights from Germany to Mallorca and Ibiza and vice versa would also be affected.

According to various media reports, the planned strike will also affect eight other Spanish airports in addition to Mallorca and Ibiza. These are: Barcelona, Malaga, Madrid, Alicante, Seville, Valencia, Girona and Santiago de Compostela.

Reason for the planned strike at Ryanair

The reason for the announced strike is that, according to USOP and SITCPLA, Ryanair is the only international airline in Spain without a collective agreement. Unions demand “decent working conditions for all staff” at the airline, reports among others “BILD“.

The Ryanair workers’ strike planned for late June and early July could also cause problems for travelers from Germany bound for Spain. Because the Irish low-cost airline offers connections to Spain from numerous German airports. These include Berlin-Brandenburg, Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt-Hahn, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn and Nuremberg.

Flight cancellations at Lufthansa, Eurowings and Easyjet in the summer

Not only Ryanair customers could be affected by flight cancellations during the summer holidays, but also passengers from other airlines. For example, Lufthansa and several of its subsidiary airlines, including Eurowings, are cutting their flight schedule in July due to a lack of staff in-house and at ground and airport service providers. Lufthansa alone canceled 900 flights within Germany and Europe at the hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for July, as the airline announced last Wednesday (June 8) on request (TRAVELBOOK reported).

Due to a lack of staff, Easyjet also canceled some of its flights in the summer. Twelve daily flights to and from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) are affected until the end of August. Read more details on this page.

What rights do travelers have in the event of flight cancellations?

In the event of flight cancellations or delays of more than three hours due to strikes, the airline must offer travelers alternative transport to their destination – for example by rebooking on another flight. If this does not happen, this right can be asserted. In this article you will learn how to proceed in such a case.
