RVD: no comment on royal couple’s holiday photos

The Government Information Service does not want to say whether steps are being taken against media that this weekend published photos of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima celebrating holidays on the Mediterranean Sea. That has been the policy of the RVD for several years. The recordings are in violation of the media code that the Royal House uses for itself.

The photos show the royal couple in swimwear – Máxima in bikini – on board and at their new boat Alma, registered in Muiden. According to the German boulevard magazine image the recordings were made on Friday near Mykonos, during a cruise that Willem-Alexander and Máxima make along various Greek islands.

That the king was staying in Greece had already become clear from flight data from the government plane and from the signing, last Friday, of a Royal Message to the Lower House about the corona app. Only the message was signed in Ermionida, the municipality where he has his holiday home, and not Mykonos.

After publication by Bild, the photos quickly found their way to Dutch media such as GeenStijl and Ditjes & Datjes, and on Twitter and in image banks of photo press agencies.

According to the media code promulgated by the Royal House in 2005, they should not be distributed. The code “aims to protect the privacy of members of the Royal Family”. A number of times, lawsuits were also filed against media that had published holiday or other private photos of the House of Orange.
