Russia’s failure in the Champions League widens the gap with Portugal

Russian clubs had a terrible nightmare for another European Cup week. Lokomotiv, Krasnodar and Zenit lost to Bayern, Chelsea and Borussia. CSKA saved Russia from complete failure by playing a draw with Dynamo Zagreb. Of course, not the best result either, but at least one point.

As a result, at the end of the week, Russia received only one point, which, when divided by six teams that started in this euroseason, gave 0.16 points. This is negligible. Especially against the backdrop of the successful performance of Portugal, with which we imitate the struggle for the sixth line in the UEFA rankings.

The Portuguese have three teams left in European competition – Porto in the Champions League and Benfica with Braga in the Europa League. And they all won this time. As a result, six points (in the UEFA rating standings, a victory brings two points) is divided by five teams that started in the euroseason, and we get 1.2 points. That is, a point more than Russia.

As a result, the lag from Portugal at the end of the current season is already 0.833 points. And as a result, in five years we are losing 5.733 points (before the start of the season it was 3.90). It will be unrealistic to win back such a gap this season. If, of course, Zenit and Lokomotiv do not play in the Champions League final, CSKA won’t win the Europa League, and the Portuguese won’t score a single point.

But this is not so bad. From below the Belgians are pressing in more and more actively. If at the end of the last season Russia was ahead of Belgium by more than comfortable 7.65 points, now the gap has decreased to 2.9 points.

Of course, this season, Russia is unlikely to miss the seventh line. But in a year it will already be in question. Provided that our teams continue to lose points in Europe.
