As a result of the recent elections, for the first time since the 1999 elections, not four but five parties have entered the parliament, with the “Young People” receiving 13 seats in the parliament’s lower house.

The party was founded by businessman Alexei Nechayev, but one of the most famous people in the party is the former mayor of Yakutsk Sardan Avksentiev.

The party was formed on the initiative of Putin’s friends brothers Mikhail and Yuri Kovalchuk, and with their participation, Medusa was identified.

Nechayev has come to Yuri Kovalchuk as the “curator of the new party project” and has undertaken to be a sponsor and organizer of the process, a source in the presidential administration said.

An interlocutor of the publication, who is familiar with the course of negotiations between Nechayev and Kovalchuk, explained the meaning of “Young People” as follows: “For Nechayev’s money, under the roof of Kovalchuk.”

A source in the presidential administration agreed with this description.

The voter protection organization “Golos” has counted that the “Young People” was often told on the TV channels “Pirmais kanāls” and REN TV. Their shares belong to the National Media Group, which is controlled by the Kovalchuk brothers.

“Yuri Kovalchuk has nothing to do with the party’s work,” Nechayev told Meduza.

Kovalchuk himself did not answer the questions of the publication.

Prior to the Russian parliamentary elections, organizations linked to opposition leader Alexei Navalny were declared “extremist”, preventing any of their representatives from running in the elections themselves. Most other notable members of the opposition were also barred from running by various other means.
