Russian hackers have attacked 42 countries since the beginning of the war

“Since the beginning of the war, Russian hacker attacks have been successful 29% of the time,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith.

Nearly two-thirds of cyber-espionage targets involved NATO members. The United States was the main target, followed by Poland, the main conduit for military aid to Ukraine. Also in recent months, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Turkey have experienced numerous attacks by Russian hackers.

The exception is Estonia, where Microsoft has not detected a single Russian cyberattack since February 24th. The company believes that Estonia has implemented cloud computing, where intruders are easier to detect.

Microsoft also emphasized that Ukraine’s cyber defense turned out to be stronger overall than Russia’s capabilities. Cybercriminals from the Russian Federation are careful not to release destructive data-destroying viruses outside of Ukraine, as happened with the NotPetya virus in 2017.

Ukraine has also set an example in the field of data protection by moving from storing its data locally on servers to distributing this data in cloud services hosted in data centers across Europe.
