A U.S.envoy is scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for discussions focused on potential resolutions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Steve Witkoff, making his sixth trip to Russia this year, will be joined by Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, as diplomatic efforts intensify.
This visit occurs amid a flurry of international negotiations surrounding a U.S.-proposed peace plan for Ukraine. The plan, initially presented to Kyiv with 28 stipulations, has been perceived as leaning heavily toward Moscow’s interests, particularly regarding territorial concessions. The stakes are high as both sides navigate a complex geopolitical landscape, with the potential for a negotiated settlement or a prolonged continuation of hostilities impacting regional stability adn global security.
The initial American proposal included a provision requiring Ukraine to relinquish control of portions of the Donbas region it currently holds. Following feedback from Ukrainian officials, the plan has been revised and will now be presented to the Kremlin. Discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives took place recently in Geneva and Florida prior to this latest move.
President putin has indicated the original draft “could form the basis for future agreements,” but has simultaneously signaled limited willingness to compromise, citing perceived Russian gains on the battlefield. Russian state television recently broadcast footage of Putin in military attire, accompanied by reports from commanders claiming the capture of the Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk.
Beyond territorial demands, Moscow is seeking guarantees that Ukraine will never join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and is also pushing for limitations on the size of Ukraine’s armed forces.
