MOSCOW – President Vladimir Putin said Russia would send missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads to Belarus in the coming months.

Putin revealed this on Saturday (06/25/2022) when he received Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

“In the coming months, we will transfer the Iskander-M tactical missile system to Belarus, which can use ballistic missiles or cruise missiles, in its conventional and nuclear versions,” Putin said in a broadcast on Russian television at the start of his meeting with Lukashenko in Saint Petersburg.

He also offered to upgrade Belarusian warplanes to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, amid rising tensions with the West over Ukraine.

“Many Su-25s (planes) are in service with the Belarusian military. They can be upgraded in the right way,” the Russian leader said.

“This modernization should be carried out in aircraft factories in Russia and personnel training should begin according to this,” Putin said, after Lukashenko asked him to “customize” the plane.

“We will agree on how to achieve this,” Putin said.

Putin has made several references to nuclear weapons since his country launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, which the West sees as a warning to the West not to intervene.

Lukashenko said last month that his country had purchased the nuclear-capable Iskander missile and S-400 anti-missile and anti-aircraft systems from Russia.
