Russia tests hypersonic cruise missile | ABC News

Russia has in recent years spoken loudly about the development of futuristic weapons that they hope will give the country an advantage in an arms race with the West.

Pictures distributed by the Russian Ministry of Defense show a warship firing the cruise missile into the Barents Sea. In a statement, the ministry said that the missile hit a target 350 kilometers away, and that the speed was at almost mach 7, ie seven times the speed of sound.

Putin unveiled the development of the new Zircon missile in February 2019. The president said it was able to hit targets offshore 1,000 kilometers away and achieve a speed of mach 9.

The Ministry of Defense says they plan to equip both warships and submarines with the missile.
