Kremlin Dismisses Trump’s Shift on Russia as “Alternative Reality”
MOSCOW – The Kremlin has reacted to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent suggestion that Russia be allowed to “do whatever it wants” to NATO countries failing to meet financial obligations, dismissing the statement as stemming from an “alternative reality.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov characterized Trump’s remarks as unusual, noting the timing – made while it was nighttime in Moscow – and highlighting the irony given Russia’s ongoing nightly drone attacks on Ukraine.
the exchange underscores a deepening rift in transatlantic relations and raises questions about the future of U.S. security commitments, particularly as the war in Ukraine continues. Trump’s comments, a significant departure from his previous stance, have sparked international criticism and prompted renewed debate over the reliability of american leadership. The Kremlin’s response signals a lack of willingness to compromise despite the shifting geopolitical landscape.
Peskov pointed to ongoing Russian military gains in Ukraine, stating the situation “deteriorates every day” when Kyiv refuses to negotiate. He reiterated Putin’s stated openness to a “peaceful solution,” while simultaneously asserting that Ukraine is now “much weaker” than in spring 2022.
Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, known for his provocative statements, also weighed in,claiming trump had “landed in an alternative reality.” Peskov attempted to explain the delay in the Kremlin’s response to Trump’s comments by stating it was nighttime in Moscow when they were made, a justification widely mocked given Russia’s regular overnight attacks on Ukraine.
