Russia. Putin says he opposes unlimited presidential terms – News

The Russian leader’s statements were made at a meeting with war veterans in St. Petersburg, days after announcing constitutional changes that could help him stay in power after the end of his presidential term in 2024.

When one of the veterans suggested unlimited presidential terms, Putin replied: “It would be disturbing to go back to the 1980s, when leaders were staying in power until the end of their days.”

Putin served two presidential terms between 2000 and 2008, before serving as prime minister for four years, returning to the role of President in 2012, after the terms were extended from four to six years.

Observers quoted by the Associated Press (AP) have speculated that Putin may remain in power after 2024 and take over as prime minister again, after defending more powers for parliament and the executive, reducing presidential powers.
