Russia must stop shelling Nikopol and Marganets for IAEA access to ZNPP

Russia is resorting to dangerous provocations at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, which has been seized by the troops.

The only way to eliminate the nuclear threat at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is to withdraw Russian troops and return Ukrainian control of the plant.

This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhiy Kyslitsa during his speech at the UN Security Council. The Russian Federation makes it impossible for the IAEA mission to enter the territory of the station.

He noted that Russia is resorting to dangerous provocations at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which was seized by the troops. The occupiers placed military equipment there, from which Ukrainian cities are shelled along the banks of the Dnieper.

Kislitsa noted that in order to conduct an IAEA mission to the ZNPP territory, Russia must stop shelling Nikopol and manganese.

“If Russia stops shelling these cities, which can generally interfere with the implementation of this mission, so that it passes (through the territory of Ukraine – ed.). It is imperative that this mission has experts in the military dimension,” Kyslytsya said.

He noted that Russia went for broke by convening a meeting of the UN Security Council.

“This meeting looks cynical, given that today Russia has resorted to new shelling of nuclear power plants, endangering the facility and its personnel,” he stressed.

According to him, Russia must declare that it accepts the IAEA mission without any conditions, not to impede the passage of the mission from Ukraine. It is also necessary to clear mines from the nuclear power plant and approaches to it and to withdraw troops, weapons and equipment of the Russian Federation from the station.

The IAEA is intensifying contacts with Russia, Ukraine and the UN to send a mission to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, said in turn.

The Zaporozhye NPP has been controlled by Russian invaders since March 4. Also under the occupiers is the satellite city of NPP-Energodar.

On August 6, information appeared that the Russian occupiers could mine the ZNPP.

Also on August 6, it became known that one of the power units of the Zaporozhye NPP disconnected from the power grid.

On August 11, 2022, the Russian invaders repeatedly fired on Zaporozhye NPP and areas near the nuclear facility.
