Russia manipulates the GPS signal on flights, including over Bulgaria

Russia is accused of trying to manipulate the global GPS navigation system during major military maneuvers in Finland, writes the Daily Mail.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced that the signal, which is used by all civil flights, has been struck from Finland, across the Black and Mediterranean Seas, all the way to Iraq. This includes a huge part of the Bulgarian airspace.

Interruptions to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which include GPS, are caused by the jamming and backing up of satellite signals.

“This is happening around the conflict zones in Ukraine and elsewhere,” EASA said in a statement.

The most serious problems are around the Russian enclave in Kaliningrad, the Baltic Sea, eastern Finland, the Black Sea, the eastern Mediterranean and northern Iraq.

“The effects have been detected by many aircraft at different stages of the flight. This has led to rescheduling, even a change of destination and the inability to make a safe landing,” the statement added.

At the moment, however, there is no reason to suspend flights. EASA has asked all its contractors to report abnormal behavior on the GPS system and warns that other navigation may need to be used if satellite problems continue.
