Moscow The Russian authorities have blocked two Internet news sites that are critical of the Kremlin. Oktritje Media and MBKh Media announced on Wednesday evening that their websites were no longer accessible via most Internet providers. Both offers are supported by the prominent ex-oligarch and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who lives in London.

The two media organizations said they had not received any notification from the authorities as to why they were banned. According to the Russian State Register of Blocked Websites, access to both news sites has been restricted by order of the Prosecutor General. The register relies on a law that allows the blocking of websites that encourage mass unrest, extremist activities or participation in unauthorized gatherings.

Independent media and journalists in Russia face increased pressure from the authorities ahead of the September 19 general election, widely viewed as an important part of Vladimir Putin’s efforts to consolidate his rule ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In the past few months, a number of independent media outlets and journalists have been classified as “foreign agents”, which may mean additional checks by the authorities. The homes of prominent journalists were also searched.
