Russell Crowe to the rescue of a traditional Beirut restaurant

Hollywood star Russell Crowe announced on Thursday that he had made a donation to a Beirut restaurant devastated by the port explosion, in memory of chef Anthony Bourdain who loved his traditional dishes.

The Chef, located for decades in the heart of the bobo district of Gemmayzé, is a local restaurant renowned for its grandmother’s dishes.

Both the restaurant and the neighborhood were devastated by the August 4 explosion, which left more than 171 dead and 6,500 injured and devastated entire districts of Beirut.

New Zealander Russell Crowe, who notably received the Oscar for best actor for the film Gladiator in 2000, said on Twitter that he made the donation “in the name of Anthony Bourdain.”

“I think that’s what he probably would have done if he was still here,” he added, of the legendary American chef who committed suicide in 2018.

“I hope things can get back into place quickly,” he added.

The New Zealand actor made his donation of $ 5,000 on a GoFundMe page created by the followers of this Beirut nugget. Almost $ 11,000 was raised in less than 24 hours, slightly below the target of $ 13,000.

It was at Le Chef restaurant that Anthony Bourdain, famous for his television shows where he explored cuisine from around the world, had his first meal, when he was stranded with his team for a week in Lebanon during the war. of 2006 with Israel.

“Very good cuisine, very traditional”, said Bourdain on his show, believing that the restaurant offered “a successful combination” of old and new. It’s “a good first meal in Beirut”.
