Russell argues that rumors of departure are fueled by Camp Pérez | NOW

That George Russell’s future at Williams has suddenly become uncertain, according to the driver, is due to Sergio Pérez. The Mexican’s entourage would have helped spread the rumors.

“I think all the speculation has been fueled by Pérez’s camp,” Russell said on Monday Motorsport.com. “They also try to portray him in other teams, so that he has a better chance of a seat at Red Bull. That’s how I see it.”

Pérez was recently told that he will have to make way for four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel at Racing Point at the end of this year. With his experience and Latin American sponsors, the thirty-year-old Mexican is interesting for many other teams. At Red Bull, Alexander Albon has to fear for his seat, because he is short compared to Max Verstappen.

Russell still has a contract with Williams until the end of 2021. Although the 22-year-old Briton has never taken a World Cup point, he structurally outperforms his teammates at the struggling racing stable.

“I still have a contract so I don’t have to worry about anything. I just focus on my own work,” said Russell.

Russell expects 100 percent clarity within week

Earlier this year, it was announced that Williams was being acquired by Dorilton Capital. Matthew Savage, chairman of that investment company, was in Portimão this weekend at the Grand Prix of Portugal where Russell finished in fourteenth place.

The young driver confirmed that he spoke to his new boss before the race. “They have assured me that they have no idea how the rumors got into the world. The team never wants to comment on these kinds of situations, precisely because it often takes things out of context.”

Russell says not to worry. “I am convinced that I will be on the grid next year. The team will provide 100 percent clarity about that within a week.”

The next Grand Prix is scheduled for this weekend in Imola, Italy.
