Lionel Messi is pledged astronomical million euros in his current four-year contract. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (65) congratulates the superstar, but is critical of the salary.

Lionel Messi’s working paper made him laugh, Rummenigge explained in the Italian daily CORRIERE DELLA SERA. “I can only congratulate him on receiving an astronomical contract.”

The daily newspaper EL MUNDO published the working paper negotiated in 2017 between Barcelona and Messi’s father and advisor Jorge. La Pulga is expected to collect up to 555 million euros gross.

Rummenigge criticizes the development of salaries in the football business. “In the past ten years we’ve done everything wrong because we’ve been spending more and more on players and advisors,” said the FC Bayern CEO, who was leaving at the end of the year.

One must “return to a more rational model”, demands the 65-year-old. This was shown by the corona pandemic. Will the project succeed? Rummenigge: “I hope it’s possible, but it won’t be easy.”

The solution could be a salary cap. Rummenigge spoke about this topic in 2008 with the then Uefa President Michel Platini. However, EU politicians have announced that this violates European law.
