Rugby. The New Zealand Championship will start on June 13. Sport

The New Zealand rugby championship organized in place of Super Rugby will start on June 13, the federation announced on Monday. The first match of this championship which must face, behind closed doors, five franchises over ten days will oppose the Highlanders to the Chiefs. The competition, dubbed Super Rugby Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand), is scheduled to last until August 16.

It will be the local version of Super Rugby, which normally opposes 15 teams from five countries divided into three conferences of five: New Zealand, South Africa-Argentina and Australia-Japan. The evolution of the pandemic and the closing of borders in certain countries led the Sanzaar, which oversees the competition, to suspend it in mid-March.

To avoid contagion within the teams, the New Zealand authorities have implemented a strict health protocol. All participants will have to take the temperature daily and will travel on specially chartered flights to avoid contact with the outside. Australia is also planning to hold its own five-a-side mini-championship, with no advance dates yet.
