Former Bengals Running back Rudi Johnson Dies at 45

Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer, echoed the sentiment, stating, “We are inconsolably about the tragic death of our friend and customer Rudi Johnson. Rudi put his life in the service.” Schaffer further emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of head injuries, stating, “These tragic circumstances also have to serve as a call to act.”
Drafted by the Bengals in the fourth round out of Auburn in 2001, Johnson enjoyed several successful seasons in Cincinnati. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in three consecutive years (2004-2006) and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2004. he concluded his NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 2008, but injuries ultimately forced his retirement.
Schaffer described it as “one of the greatest honour of my career and my life to be able to describe him both as clients and a friend,” adding that Johnson’s legacy “will not be measured on statistics or awards, but to the countless life he touched, and the love he has given away so generously.”
