RSV outbreak declared on Restorative Unit at PCH | Ocean 100

RSV Outbreak Declared at Prince County Hospital

Island Health Facilities Navigate Respiratory Illnesses

A respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) outbreak has prompted visitor restrictions at Prince County Hospital in Summerside, while an earlier outbreak at Maplewood Manor in Alberton has been successfully contained. Public health officials emphasize preventative measures as respiratory illnesses circulate.

Visitor Restrictions Implemented

The Restorative Unit at Prince County Hospital is currently experiencing an RSV outbreak. To protect vulnerable patients, the hospital is limiting visits to one person at a time. All visitors are required to adhere to current infection control protocols, including mandatory mask-wearing.

Health PEI confirmed that the outbreak of respiratory illness at Maplewood Manor in Alberton is now over. Officials expressed gratitude for the dedication of the facility’s staff in effectively managing and limiting the spread of the virus.

All visitors to Health PEI care facilities are strongly advised to postpone their visits if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness. This precaution aims to minimize the risk of transmission to patients who are particularly susceptible to complications.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be severe in young children and older adults. CDC data shows that RSV leads to approximately 60,000-160,000 hospitalizations each year in the United States among children under 5 years old.

Preventative Measures Remain Crucial

Health officials continue to stress the importance of preventative measures, such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick. These simple steps can significantly reduce the spread of respiratory viruses within the community.

The situation at both facilities is being closely monitored, and Health PEI will provide updates as needed. The focus remains on protecting the health and well-being of patients and staff.
