RS virus in Bremen – chief doctor sounds the alarm: “Nowhere is a free bed”

Respiratory infections are currently spreading, especially in children – earlier than usual. The children’s clinics and practices in Bremen are therefore already reaching their limits.

After the holidays, respiratory infections are rampant in schools in Bremen, with the RS virus playing a special role. The head physician of the parent-child center warns against the occupancy of practices, emergency rooms and children’s clinics.

Compared to the “buten un binnen” portal, Martin Claßen says: “We have an unusually high number of infections with the RS virus.” This particularly affects premature and former premature babies and infants in Bremen.

At the same time, like every autumn, he also observed respiratory infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis in the little ones. However, the cases of illness appear earlier than usual from doctors: as early as October, not until the end of the year.

Children’s clinics in Bremen: “Nowhere a free bed”

Beds are indeed available, but they cannot be used without supervision. The doctor in the report: “On Monday evening I was on duty myself and there was nowhere in the whole region a free bed”.

The infections occurred later in Bremen than in the rest of Germany: because the schools opened again later. The doctor also sees the corona pandemic as being responsible for the extent of the wave of disease.

According to the doctor, children in particular are currently not sufficiently used to respiratory infections: Contact with viruses of any kind, which normally leads to immunity, was absent for months.
