Rousseau (sp.a) and Lachaert (Open Vld) preformateurs, cdH is off

Vivaldi can start: seven parties have agreed to start government negotiations together. But an essential question has not been tranched: no agreement on a formateurship (read premiership) of the case. In the meantime, Conner Rousseau (sp.a) and Egbert Lachaert (Open Vld) act as ‘preformateurs’. And the small cdH has been thrown out.

In the news: So soon a breakthrough and a new federal government.

De details: They do that with seven, the Christian Democratic family splits.

  • The main fact today is fixing that the Vivaldi will be three and a half seasons: the orange color will only be half represented. Because the conclusion at the meeting with the eight chairmen who wanted to form Vivaldi is clear: Maxime Prèvot (cdH) is too much for the man.
  • Certainly for CD&V and chairman Joachim Coens that is unpleasant news: he had hoped to join one family after all. But once again nothing remains of a ‘bond’ with his counterpart across the language border.
  • The pressure was after all, great to discharge the cdH: PS, MR and Ecolo already had three parties at the table, who together achieve a large French-speaking majority. All three of them wanted to get rid of the cdH.
  • For example, CD&V must back down, although it does make things more bearable for a number of parties, because they are so ‘mathematically indispensable’ in this coalition. Only sp.a and Groen are now still ‘available’ with their nine seats each, and can be put under permanent pressure to ’round it off’, in the event of a conflict.
  • It’s not the only bad news for CD&V. Because the largest Flemish party in votes cannot lay claim, for the time being, to the Sixteen.
  • The discussion about the appointment of a formateur (and therefore a pre-premiership) kept things bogged down between the presidents for hours. So it was really about the posts, not about the content.
  • And it was terribly wrong. It became very clear that Georges-Louis Bouchez (MR), the great champion of Vivaldi, absolutely does not want to grant the premiership to Paul Magnette (PS), nevertheless the largest party at the table, and the largest political family.
  • But it is also stuck on the Flemish side: Open Vld does not get it from CD&V, and CD&V blocks on Open Vld, to run the case.
  • It says a lot about the atmosphere in which such a Vivaldi coalition starts: it is not exactly a house of trust.
  • That meant that the solution of a ‘preformateur’ had to come out on top. Royal commissioner Egbert Lachaert (Open Vld) continues, sp.a chairman Conner Rousseau joins.
