ROUNDUP / Seoul: China and North Korea seem to resume freight traffic | news

SEOUL / PEKING (dpa-AFX) – After a month-long hiatus, China is reportedly transporting goods back to neighboring North Korea by rail, according to South Korean information. There are indications that cross-border freight train traffic has resumed, the unification ministry in Seoul said Monday. However, it is still unclear whether there will be regular rail freight transport between the two countries again.

The Beijing Foreign Ministry confirmed that an agreement has been reached with North Korea to resume rail freight traffic between the Chinese border town of Dandong and Sinuiju on the North Korean side. Both sides will further strengthen coordination to ensure safe freight transport and contribute to friendly bilateral relations, a spokesperson said. He didn’t say if the trains were already running.

On Monday, a freight train with more than ten wagons was seen traveling from the Chinese border town of Dandong to Sinuiju via the Yalu River, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported. Rail freight has returned to normal due to the “stabilization of the Covid 19 situation,” Yonhap said, citing an informant in China.

The Communist leadership in North Korea had closed national borders in the beginning due to the crown pandemic, which also had a major impact on trade with China. In January of this year, China initially confirmed that it would resume freight traffic with the neighboring country. However, according to South Korean media reports, he was again suspended at the end of April after new cases of infection in Dandong. North Korea first confirmed a corona outbreak in May. Three months later, the leadership of the tightly isolated country said the virus had been defeated in their country ./dg/lw/DP/stk
