Rotterdam police investigate racism in app group of agents

The Rotterdam police has started an investigation into racist statements by agents in a private WhatsApp group. That writes NRC, which has screenshots of those conversations.

It is a 2019 conversation between nine police officers in which citizens with a migrant background are referred to as “cancer people, pussy Africans and pauper allochthonous” whom they want to “shoot”. That happened, according to NRC, after officers had seen a video of a white 15-year-old boy who was beaten up for several minutes by black peers in Spijkenisse.

According to deputy police chief Karin Krukkert, “corrective talks” were already held in February 2019 and the app group was closed. But that, according to Krukkert, was insufficient. “Given the seriousness of the shared reports, we believe that this case should have been discussed and assessed more widely internally at the time,” she told NRC. “There will still be an in-depth investigation.”
