Rotterdam: Medvedev fails in round one and missed jump to second place in the world rankings

With his defeat in the final at the Australian Open against Novak Djokovic, Medvedev had missed the opportunity to line up behind the Serbian in the world rankings and to end an era.

For almost 16 years the first two places have been taken without exception by Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer (Switzerland) or Andy Murray (Great Britain). The last player in the top 2 who did not come from this quartet was Australian Lleyton Hewitt in July 2005.
