Rotterdam as the first of the largest cities for a total ban on fireworks

The reason for this change of position is the “umpteenth” incidents and the violence at the turn of the year, writes the VVD department on its website. According to the party, fireworks cause a lot of inconvenience and injuries every year and it creates an “atmosphere of lawlessness” in different neighborhoods, where cars and containers are set on fire.

The call from the police and other aid workers is also important. “We stand in front of the men and women who carry out very heavy work for our safety.”

Fireworks shows

The VVD department stipulates that the municipality must make money available for the organization of professional fireworks shows in all fourteen neighborhoods, “so that every Rotterdammer can still enjoy fireworks”. Mayor Aboutaleb is willing to investigate this proposal.

Aboutaleb says he sees the VVD step as an inevitable development. But he prefers the government to come up with a measure that applies to the whole of the Netherlands. “That means that sales and distribution will also be banned, otherwise only parting is prohibited,” he said Rijnmond.

House of Representatives

A majority in the Lower House is also in favor of a ban on dangerous fireworks, although it is still unclear which fireworks should be included. VVD and CDA are against a national ban on flares and blazing fireworks, just like the PVV.

VVD party leader Dijkhoff made today known to be “not deaf and blind” for calls from mayors, ophthalmologists and social workers. He notes that measures taken in recent years to limit nuisance are not enough to prevent “all misery”. “After we have considered everything, we make the decisions that we consider necessary. Not before.”

Apeldoorn already took in October as the first Dutch municipality to decide to introduce a general fireworks ban at the coming New Year.
