Rotterdam agrees with plan for total ban on fireworks in the city | NOW

The Rotterdam city council agreed on Thursday evening with a plan for a total ban on fireworks in the city, reports Rijnmond.

Only the CDA parties, Livable Rotterdam and the PVV were against the ban. According to Rijnmond the municipal council will vote on the definitive implementation of the plan in April.

Earlier on Thursday, it was announced that the Cabinet would like to get rid of all the flares and bangers during the coming New Year, sources confirmed to NU.nl after reports by the NOS. This partial fireworks ban will be discussed in the Council of Ministers on Friday.

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is said to be afraid of the consequences of such a national partial ban. According to him, the government is aiming for “two regimes in the Netherlands”. “Municipalities that have a total ban and municipalities that do not have that”, says Aboutaleb.

The National Police, but also the Dutch Safety Board (OVV) and various doctors have been calling for a ban on bang fireworks and flares. According to the police, there were 9,300 incidents during the New Year, about 400 more than the year before.
