Make the puppets dance

Let the puppets dance once as a director: Vidiyo wants to fulfill this wish to have children. Photo: Lego / dpa-tmn

However, they must be able to use a smartphone or tablet to play, because nothing works without the corresponding Vidiyo app.

Before the children can put their talent to the test in directing a music video, a little classic Lego fun is announced: First, the music-making minifigures, so-called beatboxes and the beatbits also included in the set are assembled. That can be done in a few minutes.

Beatbits look like little record covers and represent the effects that will be applied later in the videos. A beatbox has space for up to 16 beatbits and can be individually equipped and decorated.

Punk or Tropical House?

When it comes to music, children can use different genres. You can choose from punk or tropical house, but also candy pop and hip-hop. The actual game then begins by scanning the beatbox in the app. It looks something like in the popular augmented reality game Pokemon Go.

Your own band with up to three characters is then put together in the app and names and album covers are determined. So that everything is really child-friendly and no profanity is used, the children can only put together the band name from given words, so that, for example, Acid Occupation or Honey Waders comes out.

The band members can then also be individually styled, similar to simulation games. It is very gratifying that Lego has resisted the temptation to open up an additional source of income here. There is no in-app store where virtual items can or must be purchased.

Start mit 30 Songs

As soon as you have scanned the toy, 30 songs are available from the Universal pool to start with. And new songs are added every two weeks, so that within the first six months you have around 50 different songs to choose from.

After scanning, the square beatbits plates activate digital effects that are used in the music video. With the Beatbits you can change the costumes of the minifigures, animate them to certain dance movements, activate additional sound effects or apply certain filters. But it is also possible to let a rain of confetti or balloons fall from the sky and shower the actors with cupcakes.

If you feel a little overwhelmed by the many options, you can go through the first before filming Vidiyo-Network where videos by other Lego players can be seen. This area in the app looks like Tiktok or Youtube, but here too, parents can be sure that the little ones will only see harmless content.

Video review before sharing

Clips shared with friends are between 5 and 20 seconds long. A moderation team at Lego ensures that no people or human figures can be seen in the uploaded videos, only the animated block figures in an augmented reality environment. Other content, such as text on posters, which could contain personal information, is also not released for upload.

And even with the comments, there is a rigid child protection, because they cannot be typed freely, but can only be formulated from a predetermined set of harmless emojis. Checking the videos takes a few minutes, but worked perfectly in the test.

If you don’t want to share the video with others online, the rules are not so strict. The children themselves or other personal content can then also be seen in the picture.

A set for 20 euros

In the Vidiyo app it can happen that the children immerse themselves so deeply that they forget the time and thus sit in front of the screen a little longer than it would make sense.

The sets from Lego Vidiyo, which only consist of a few building blocks, are comparatively expensive with prices starting at 20 euros. However, the app for Android and iOS is free and does not collect any personal data. Early versions often had a hangover. After an update, the app is now stable.
