João Almeida is not sure that the Giro d’Italia will be completed. The rosette bearer realizes that the corona virus entails a lot of uncertainty and also questions the weather conditions.
After a considerable number of positive tests within the Giro bubble – including Steven Kruijswijk had to leave the race – the discussion about whether or not to finish the three-week stage race has increased.
The American team EF Pro Cycling made a letter to the UCI cycling union on Thursday a proposal to abort the race on Sunday, but that was rejected.
“For the time being it is uncertain whether we will reach Milan (where the Giro normally ends, ed.). But in the end it is not up to us as riders”, Almeida said on Thursday after the finish of the eleventh stage.
“Personally, I just keep doing what I’m doing, and the same applies to my team. And if the Giro stops earlier, then so be it. There is not much we can do about it. A decision has to be made that is best for everyone. . “
‘The weather is not getting any better’
22-year-old Almeida is also concerned about the weather in (Northern) Italy. On Thursday, the finish was under harsh conditions and more rain is forecast for the coming days.
“It is not getting any better”, said the Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider. “The weather is really bad and we are not even in the north yet. Imagine what it will be like next week at almost 2,000 meters.”
For the time being, the 103rd edition of the Giro will continue as usual, which means that the peloton will ride the thirteenth stage on Friday. The course is set from Cervia to Monselice, where the route is mostly flat.
