Los Angeles (AP) – New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (40) is to be portrayed in the planned political drama “They Are Us” by Australian actress Rose Byrne (41, “Bridal Alert”, “X-Men: First Decision”).

Scriptwriter and director Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”, “Anon”) addresses the terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch in March 2019 by a racist bomber, in which 51 people died and dozen were injured.

He is particularly concerned with the reaction to the attack, said Niccol in a message, as reported by the film portal “Hollywood Reporter”. “How an unprecedented act of hatred was overcome with a surge of love and support”.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Ardern had proven herself as a crisis manager at the time. She approached the Muslims and coined the eponymous phrase “They are us” with a view to the more than 40,000 Muslims in the country – and that New Zealand was their home. The Social Democrat later had semi-automatic weapons banned.

The script for the film was created with the help of affected members of the mosques. Born in New Zealand, Niccol previously wrote the scripts for films such as “The Truman Show” or the end-of-time thriller “In Time – your time is running out”.
