A fire broke out in an apartment in Graz on Tuesday evening, in which a man was also injured. The cause may have been forgotten food on the stove that was switched on.

The 27-year-old’s neighbors noticed the smoke development around 7 p.m. and notified the emergency services. When they arrived at the residential building in the Jakomini district, the man had already extinguished most of the fire with a hand-held fire extinguisher – he had previously been alone in his girlfriend’s apartment, a neighbor helped him extinguish it. The 27-year-old was brought to the LKH for examination and treatment by the Red Cross.
The damage remained relatively minor, but fire department chief Dieter Pilat took the fire as an opportunity to advertise the installation of home smoke detectors: These inexpensive devices could prevent high levels of property damage and save human lives.
