Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United. Three candidates are said to be possible successors to the star player: Victor Osimhen, Memphis Depay and Jonathan David are on the list, according to a report.

Manchester United are planning to get active in the winter transfer market. Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure has left a void in the center of attack. To fill this gap, United have looked around the transfer market. Those in charge have their sights set on three candidates.

The termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was inevitable for Manchester United after the star’s explosive interview. In an interview with journalist Piers Morgan, the multi-award-winning world footballer complained, among other things, about the club’s lack of trust and respect. United then terminated Ronaldo’s contract by mutual consent with immediate effect.

Ronaldo’s replacement should arrive in the winter transfer window

Manchester United’s plans are in full swing to fill the gap left by Ronaldo at the center of attack. A replacement is expected to arrive in the next winter transfer window. According to a report from Sky, Red Devils managers are currently targeting three candidates for a winter change: Victor Osimhen, Memphis Depay and Jonathan David.

Osimhen best candidate for succession

Manchester United’s main transfer target is said to be according to the Sky report the 23 year old Victor Osimhen of SSC Napoli. The Nigerian leads the Serie A scorers chart with nine goals. Osimhen arrived at Napoli from Lille in the summer of 2020 for a good 75 million and immediately hit the target. The right footer is considered a modern striker with strengths in dribbling, finishing and directing the ball.

Bringing Osimhen to Manchester in winter is considered an impossible feat. Napoli would like at all costs to keep the top scorer until the summer. According to information from French journalist Ignazio Genuardi, the leaders of Serie A are asking for a transfer fee of 100 to 120 million for a summer transfer. The transfer requirements for a winter deal would likely go beyond any size.

Depay and David as options

Manchester United has already looked for alternatives. The Sky service mentions the names of Memphis Depay and Jonathan David. In both cases, winter negotiations would probably be easier than with Osimhen. Depay, 28, has been out of action at FC Barcelona since the summer, while LOSC striker David, 22, is clearly looking for the next step in his career. The Canadian is also sold to Milan.

If none of the best traded transfers can be implemented in the winter, United are planning a loan deal until the summer. A long-term solution should therefore be found. The report does not show which players would be eligible for a six-month loan deal.
