Rome’s mayor Virginia Raggi wants to run again

Raggi, the top politician of the five-star movement, surprisingly announced on Monday evening that she wanted to campaign for the mayoral elections planned for the spring of 2021 in Rome. “I am submitting my candidacy again. I am convinced that we can continue, ”said the 42-year-old lawyer to the community council members of her group. Her goal is to continue the fight against corruption and the Mafia, which her group has been resolutely promoting in the capital in recent years.

Against the mafia

Since taking office, Raggi has campaigned strongly against illegality widespread in the Italian capital, against mafia clans and corrupt lobbies and achieved important results in the process. The “Mafia Capitale” trial was conducted against members of a criminal network that had infiltrated Rome for years and enriched itself with corruption and favoritism.
However, in four years in office, Raggi failed to get many problems under control.

The mayor’s opponents criticize the Roman transport companies, which have been notorious for years for inefficiency and corruption, have still not been rehabilitated. The local transport company ATAC has been plagued by scandals such as favoritism and corruption for years, delays and fare dodgers also put a strain on the image of public transport companies.

Garbage disposal problems not solved

The city’s chronic waste disposal problems were also not resolved. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Eternal City has also been confronted with a dramatic economic crisis and a major decline in tourists. Countless businesses in the areas of gastronomy, culture, leisure and tourism had to close.

It is now expected that the other parties will soon announce the names of their candidates for the mayoral election in Rome. The opposition Lega wants to send its own candidate at the head of a center-right block into the race and has moved into a prestigious party seat in the center of the capital, the former headquarters of the Communist Party (PCI) in the central Via delle Botteghe Oscure. It is still unclear who the Social Democrats (Partito Democratico / PD) will send into the race for the 3.5 million metropolis.
