Romanians attacked Riegersburg Castle, owned by an Austrian prince who allegedly killed Romania’s biggest bear, Arthur, with negative comments, Digi24 TV reported.

The castle, advertised as a tourist destination, has garnered more than 11,000 negative reviews on its website, mostly from Romanians, leading to a drop in its rating from 5 to 2 stars.

“Bear killer! Shame on you, trophy hunter with no respect for the environment,” was one of the comments. The hashtags #Arthur and #AzsamArthur have already been created.

Earlier, it was reported that a criminal case had been filed in Romania in connection with killing the bear, alleging poaching and illegal use of weapons.

According to the media, an Austrian prince paid 7,000 euros to shoot the biggest bear in Romania, and perhaps in the whole of Europe, the television notes. The bear, named Arthur, was 17 years old and carried 593 of the possible 600 points as a hunting trophy. The wild animal lived in a protected natural area, BTA clarified.

Brown bears are a protected species throughout Europe, and in Romania they can only be killed with special permission from the Ministry of the Environment.

According to the non-governmental organization Agent Green, which has been monitoring Arthur for years, a hunting permit was issued for another bear, a “problematic” female raising young, which caused damage in the Transylvanian village of Ojdula. According to the organization, Arthur lived in the wild and did not come close to settlements.
